"Different interferometric methods were explored, mainly lateral shearing interferometry and Tabolt autoimaging using a Ronchi ruling. At the end, the second method was selected. Chapter 1 makes a brief review of some of the main interferometric systems described in Chapter 2. A moiré technique is used to measure the fringe period, which permits us to calculate the lens power. The basic measurement of the fringe period can in principle be performed by any of many different methods. The moiré method is the simplest. However in the research process a digital fringe measurement was considered. At this stage a new phase detection method was implemented. This method is described with detail in chapter 4, with a brief introduction to interferogram analysis and phase detection in chapter 3. Then, in a effort to find new phase detecting methods, a new graphical representation of sampling function was found. This representation is described in chapter 5. Finally, applications of the final method were looked for. One of the most interesting applications is the measurement of the power of ophthalmic lenses. Nevertheless, these lenses may have several different power distributions, besides the lenses with rotational symmetry, also called spherical. One of these lenses are the ones used to correct the axial astigmatism in the human eye. Here, a new problem was found, namely that many different types of lens surfaces may correct astigmatism. It is only necessary that the curvatures be different along two perpendicular diameters. A complete study of these surfaces was carried out and described in chapter 6."
