"The objective of this thesis is to study new techniques to analyze fringe patterns. Computer-aided fringe analysis is a fast growing research field in optical interferometry, optical metrology and robotic vision. Fringe patterns may be obtained by the interference of two optical waves as occur in an interferometer, or by illuminating the object under study with structured light as in profilometry and robotic vision. In both cases the illumination pattern obtained is modulated by the physical quantity being measured. Quite often, this physical quantity phase-modulates the fringe pattern. This thesis begins with an introduction reviewing of the major contributions in fringe analysis to date. Then, a phase demodulating technique known as phase locked loop (PLL) is discussed. The PLL technique is well known in communication engineering and within this thesis it is applied to fringe analysis. Afterwards, a new cellular processor to improve the standard procedures for phase unwrapping of smooth wavefronts in the presence of severe noise and holes in the phase map is presented. Finally, a new spatial correlation tecnique for analyzing under-sampled fringe patterns in analysed."
