"The thesis gives an account of the most important papers found in the literature. They describe the methods employed to generate and to improve the quality of computer generated holograms, different techniques used to code them, and a number of applications where computer generated holograms have succeeded. Methods to compute a holographic lens and to generate Holographic Optical Elements, were described. The novelty here remains in the possibility to change the distance of the image plane from the HOE by compensating the optical path difference introduced by the synthetic CGH. Two ways to print synthetic optical elements were reported as well. A new dry photosensitive material used as a recording media was described. Its optical performance was reported. As it was pointed out, this new dry photosensitive material does not need any kind of photographic development. The usual way to print synthetic CGHs uses electron beam technology to record large numbers of gray tones was substituted by a method to record a kinoform based in photographing the synthetic kinoform displayed on the computer monitor. The number of gray tones on the photographic film was increased by using colours. Gray and the three basic colours of the computer monitor were used for this purpose."
